IAWA is saddened to report that Advisory Board Member Susan Baer has passed away.
Baer was a pioneer, the first person to run all three major airports in the New York metropolitan area for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the first woman to be named its aviation director. The IAWA community came together on July 12th for the IAWA Farnborough Reception held at the Farnborough Airshow. Thank you to Airbus for hosting this lovely event!
The Rome Reception held on June 16 at the occasion of the Third International Aviation Law Conference was a success! Many IAWA women, colleagues and friends came together at Studio Pierallini and heard remarks from keynote speaker was Ms. Giovanna Laschena, Deputy Director, Economic and Airport’s Oversight, ENAC. Thank you to Studio Pierallini for hosting the event!
On June 9, GE Aviation and IAWA hosted its 2nd annual GE-IAWA Connect reception and panel discussion in Cincinnati, Ohio. The event was attended by 50+ women and featured panelists from Cincinnati Airport, FedEx Express, GECAS, NetJets and GE Aviation. Following the panel discussion about the market environment and the digital transformation of our aviation industry, attendees had a chance to connect and network with each other.
Again this year, IAWA partnered with the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) and Women in Corporate Aviation (WCA) to bring a networking event for women aviation professionals to EBACE in Geneva, Switzerland on May 26. Women from around the globe gathered to connect and share their experiences. A series of theme-based discussions were held and moderated by industry leaders. IAWA President Lisa Piccione provided opening remarks and moderated one of the discussions.
Airbus group generously hosted a Connect for IAWA members and other guests at the ILA Berlin Air Show on 2nd June 2016. Around 40 women, mostly from the German aviation and aerospace industries participated. As special guest speaker Mrs Brigitte Zypries, Parlamentary State Secretary at the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Coordinator of Germany’s aviation and space policies, participated in the Connect. The attendees enjoyed the opportunity to network with Mrs. Zypries and among each other. As it was IAWA’s first Connect organized in Germany the response from the guests was outstanding.
Conference Organizing Committee Meets in Montreal

IAWA Board Member Mylene Scholnick and Ken Gazzola presented the 2016 Outstanding Aviator Award to Colonel Edward T. Rock at the Wings Club Annual Meeting on March 30th.
The IAWA Board of Directors came together on April 26-27th in Washington, DC. The Board focused on carrying out IAWA’s mission to Connect, Inspire & Lead women leaders in the aviation and aerospace industries.
Congratulations to Meenakshi Balan, recipient of the 2015 IAWA-ICAO Aviation Scholarship!
Meenakshi Balan is a very enthusiastic aviation professional. She obtained her Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and a Master in Aviation Industry Management, both from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. While studying Masters, Meenakshi had an opportunity to work as Quality Control Officer on IOSA audits at an accredited audit organization. Meenakshi Balan also contributes her time volunteering mainly at the Melbourne International Airport as a part of the Customer Care Program. She strongly believes in supporting and encouraging women in aviation and technology. Through this opportunity, Meenakshi is very delighted to work within the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Air Navigation Bureau and equally proud to enhance the development of women in aviation through this joint ICAO-IAWA initiative.
2016 will be an exciting and transformational year for IAWA! In 2015, IAWA’s Board of Directors and Advisory Board completed a comprehensive strategic plan review and update that will create additional opportunities for IAWA members to Connect, Inspire and Lead. Over the course of the next year, we will be unveiling several new or upgraded initiatives that will enhance how IAWA brings people together in this international industry.

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Transportation called for a special session on women at the 7th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transportation Ministerial. As a result, Ministers directed the APEC Transportation Working Group to launch a Women in Transportation initiative to develop and implement actions that advance opportunities for women throughout the sector.
